Sarah Collins at the Chicago AV Club brings pictures of the pothole that disrupted traffic in the neighborhood on Thursday the 10th. (Thanks for sharing Sarah) You can see, as crews dig out the hole, that they uncovered the old Chicago Surface Lines street car rails. Traffic on Lawrence was detoured in the area from Western Ave to Rockwell St. starting around 4:45 PM Thursday.

The Chicago Breaking News Site says the street collapse was due to a water main break.

THE CRIME REPORT from EveryBlock

A 35 year-old delivery man was arrested in the 2500 block of Belle Plaine on Wednesday the 9th. Police allege the man, Daniel Serafini, was delivering two pounds of crystal meth to a resident. The police also arrested Alfred Mortensen, 35, of the 2500 block of Belle Plaine on charges of possession of methamphetamine.

Reports at WBBM 780 say the police followed Serafini on Wednesday. He was reported by WBBM and by NBC Channel 5 to be driving the truck of his employer, Ann Sather’s Restaurant, at the time of his arrest. The reports say Mortensen was charged after the police found five additional pounds of meth at his residence.

Ann Sather’s is owned by 44th Ward Alderman Tom Tunney. Tunney told NBC he terminated the delivery man immediately. “It is both very disturbing and shocking to learn that an individual employed by my business was allegedly engaged in illegal activity,” Tunney told NBC through a spokeswoman.

In other reports from Everyblock the police say the following was reported:

Gray Gary Fisher Wahoo bike stolen from Lincoln Square. Monday 8-9:30p. I saw a sketchy looking guy walking around: shorter, white guy with a short gray and greased ponytail, with a satchel … but I locked my bike up anyway… I know I’m a moron. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Found a zune on the street in Roscoe Village. If you can describe it with details I will return it to you immediately.

Some jerk stole my women’s schwinn landmark and my son’s schwinn hitchhiker on Friday 9-11-09 around 2:30pm. The bikes were locked in front of my house. I don’t think this ad will do any good, but if anyone sees someone riding these bike they’re MINE!!!!! (Pictures at website)

Keyes found- Wilson & Damen If you got home late last night or early this morning to find that you’d had a missed connection with your keys, I might be able to help you out.

There are three of them (and a gym membership card); one printed, one colored, and one for a bike lock. If you can describe the first two/give me the name of the type of bike lock you have, I’d be more than happy to get them back to you!

Bike tire stolen- Damen Brown Line CTA station Had my back tire stolen off my bike today from the bike loop outside the Damen Brown Line stop. In case anyone finds it rolling around town or whatever, it’s an Alexrims DA16 aluminum rim with kevlar tire and flip flop hub. Moral: If you only lock up one tire, make it the back one.

The Quiz

During the American Civil War many units were given nicknames. For example, the Irish Brigade and the Stonewall Brigade. Below I’ve listed five real Illinois units and one from Wisconsin. Find the one that doesn’t belong (I mean the unit from Wisconsin):

  • The 34th Red River Rifles
  • The 16th Twins
  • Company G, Berdan’s US Sharpshooters
  • The 65th 2nd Scotch Regiment
  • The 13th Fremont’s Rifles
  • The 50th Blind Half-Hundred

Last week: According to the Encyclopedia of Chicago the area now known as Lincoln Square was first developed by German immigrant Conrad Sulzer. At first the area was a farming community supplying the city of Chicago. What was the nick name for the area:

  • The Nation’s Celery Capital

Here’s something to chew over, I found a second reference to this strange fact in the Mr. Brown Thumb blog on ChicagoNow. More recently, that would mean the mid-19th Century in this case, the nation’s celery capital moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan. A celery blight in the 1930’s moved most cultivation to California.

Celery has been used in home remedies for ailments such as insomnia, arthritis, gout, anemia, Hodgkin’s disease, leukemia, asthma, bronchitis, tuberculosis and indigestion according to a blog out of Hawaii.

WOMEN PROTEST TO SUPPORT RIGHT TO BREAST-FEED by Chicago Sun-Times

Dozens of women are reported to have protested in support of a woman’s right to breast-feed in public. Some neighbors are referring to the protest as Boob-gate and others as the Great Boob-Out. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that last month Loren Trost, 33, of Rogers Park was accosted by an unidentified woman for breast feeding her son Hank in Giddings Plaza.

“She was very unhappy that I continued breast-feeding — so unhappy that she approached all of the other women on the benches and said, ‘Look at that woman. It’s indecent and it’s illegal,’ ” Trost recalled.

The Sun-Times reports that dozens of women showed up Friday September 4th to support the right of women to breast feed in public. According to Trost there is no law prohibiting it. The protest, reported to be a very quiet event, grew from on-line postings by Trost, the report says.

Last night I lost a pink zippered wristlet made from recycled rice bags. Pretty sure I left it at Silvie’s Lounge on Irving, but I may have dropped it walking out. I had a little cash, a debit and credit card, and my license. I’m not really worth any money, I would just love to avoid the hassle of replacing everything! Please let me know if you can help! Thanks!

Other crimes this last week:

Three thefts of under $300 occurred within a few hours of each other on September 1. Also on September 1, there were two illegal entries. A forced entry into a business in the 3900 block of Western. On August 30 the police received a commercial office of a forced entry, that time in the 4100 block of Western Ave. The second entry was into a garage in the 2100 block of Cullom. We’ll need to wait till next week to see if the spree of commercial break-ins continued up Western Ave.

August 30: Children were reported involved in a disturbance in the 4600 block of Western at 8 PM.

Mio Bento Japanese Restaurant, 2245 W Irving Park Rd., is a five star Yelper. It received yet another FIVE STAR review this week.

Julius Meinl, 4363 N Western Ave., averages four stars on Yelp. It received a FIVE STAR review: “the only problem is that there’s so much good stuff, choosing one thing to order can be very painful.” They also received a three star review: “the coffee here is always fantastic! Strong, but not too bitter, it is exactly what I like.”

Bistro Campagne, 4518 N Lincoln Ave., is a four star restaurant on Yelp. It received a new FIVE STAR review.

Apart Pizza Co., 2205 W Montrose Ave. has an average review of four stars. It received a new four star review: “this place is pretty good for thin crust. The flavor’s in their sauce and toppings are great.”

Los Nopales, 4544 N Western Ave., has a four star Yelp rating and received another four star review: “The food there is phenomenal and try their steak, my mouth is watering just thinking about it.”

Opart Thai House, 4658 N Western Ave., is a four star Yelp restaurant. It just received a new review with FIVE STARS.

Sticky Rice, 4018 N Western Ave., has a four star Yelp rating it received a four star review: “I am definitely going back to try their curry and their exotic items like ant egg omelette and fried bamboo caterpillar.” And, it received a one star review: “…they treated me as if I was lying… this is totally unacceptable!!”

Happy Hookah Lounge, 4118 N Western Ave., averages four stars. It received a new two star review: “from the street, Happy Hookah looks closed – darkened windows, curtains covering every ounce of light. This is just a bad idea for any business… More professionalism would help attract more business.”

Chubby’s Wieners, 4652 N Western Ave., has 3 ½ stars on Yelp. It received a FIVE STAR review: “the fries are hot and so are the hot dogs.”

The Bad Apple, 4300 N Lincoln Ave., has 3 ½ stars. You have to wonder what’s happening when a new restaurant generates so much publicity, as this one has, with splashes in Red Eye. It’s generating a buzz, with more reviews this week than any other restaurant again. We’ll just take them in order: A three star review: “despite the overdone burger and the kind of misguided atmosphere, I’d be back for that beer list alone.” A three star review: “They’re nothing like the white curds I had on poutine in Montreal.” A four star review: “We had 3 born in Wisconsin folks with us and they all thought it was some of the best fried cheese curds they have ever had.” (Just an editorial note here: I don’t think depending on a Wisconsin native to give a thumbs up is necessarily a good review, even of a cheesy restaurant.). A three star review: “the ‘game room’ really did feel like someones basement, the back dining area felt way too boring with crappy lighting.” Another three star review: “heads up to fellow poutine lovers…, the curds we ordered were strongly flavored yellow cheddar.” A four star review: “some of the best fried cheese curds.” Another three star review: “something wrong about the lighting in the back, you feel like you’re in someone’s basement.” A four star review: “curd is the word.” And, a FIVE STAR review: “a little unorganized at the front door and difficult to grab a beer from the bartenders.” Finally, a four star review: “turn up the temp on the oil so your fried cheese curds aren’t a mass of melted goo.” Instead of the Bad Apple, we should call this place cheese head heaven. Goodness.

Chelsea Grill, 4520 N Lincoln Ave., averages 3 ½ stars. It received a three star review: “They have a good beer list, but I wasn’t too keen on the wine list, the prices are a bit overinflated.”

Tank Sushi, 4514 N Lincoln Ave., averages 3 1/2 Yelp stars and just received a new review with three stars: “I am not kidding mate, our food took 2 HOURS to arrive on Saturday evening.”

Bad Dog Tavern & Grill, 4535 N Lincoln Ave., Three stars on Yelp. A new two star review: “I came here for brunch, I was overwhelmed by stroller people. You know the people I’m talking about. The double wide stroller crowd who get upset that you ask them to move the stroller because it blocks the entire sidewalk from building to parking meter.” And a new one star review: “We asked for our checks. Only half of us got them. And only about half of them were correct. Rehashing the details of this monstrosity just makes me more angry. Don’t go here.”

Stay Dog Hotel, 4130 N Rockwell Ave., averaging 4 1/2 Yelp stars recently received a FIVE STAR Review.

Studio 4 Hair, 4613 N Lincoln Ave. has 4 ½ Yelp stars. It received  TWO FIVE STAR reviews.

Laurie’s Planet of Sound, 4639 N Lincoln Ave averages four stars on Yelp. It received a new FIVE STAR and a four star review: “They also get kudos for an awesomely cheesy vinyl collection.” (Editorial note: They should get together with the Bad Apple and do their sound.)

Ruff Haus Pets, 4652 N Rockwell St., averages 4 1/2 Yelp stars and just received a four star review: “the best part!  There are often pets inside.  There’s a little black cat and a not so little dog that sometimes, okay I visit just to pet.” (Editorial note: I fell in love with DJs hardware due to walking by and seeing the cat in the window. The cat, known as Tarzan, would hide as soon as you entered. My daughter loved walking down Western to the playlot at Welles Park, and looking for the cat in the window. The Crivello’s, who owned the store, became best friends. I think cats and small dogs work as ambassadors for local stores. Dutchie, another cat, replaced Tarzan in the years that followed, wandering around the store and rubbing customers. Dutchie was placed with a friend when the store closed and recently passed.)

The Davis Theater, 4614 N Lincoln Ave., which has an average of 3 ½ stars on Yelp, received a three star review: “I agree with other Yelpers about the bad smells…” (Editorial note: I guess they weren’t talking about the movie!) Another three star review says: “The floors are sticky, and that kind of reminds me of going to the theater as a kid.”
